Back to School

August is here and it's time to get back in the swing of school again. A new year is always exciting and it's fun to see old friends, make new ones and break out the freshly sharpened pencils. It's one of my favorite things!

This year will be a new beginning for me. I've worked in North Kansas City for 8 wonderful years. I taught 1, 2, and 3rd grades there and have been a teacher leader on many committees. I left there to move closer to my family so that my kids could enjoy their grandparents more often. I live in Brookfield now with my husband, Dustin and my two kids, Reese and River. We are looking forward to getting into a routine of a new school year and have been enjoying our summer moving and getting to see lots of family too.

This year will be exciting for several reasons. First of all, we will spend a lot of time reading and looking at books to study the type of book, themes within the story, parts of fiction and non-fiction and many other elements of reading. I will expect kids to have their nose in a book often!

We will be working hard on memorizing multiplication facts and division as well. Kids will be able to play many math games to help deepen understanding. Fractions will be introduced on a higher level as well as other concepts. We will have fun learning math but it is important to remember that fact practice is a cornerstone of all life-long math so it is vital to practice whenever possible.

This year we will also examine animals, regions of the country with a strong emphasis on Missouri. We will research famous Missourians and have a fun project with that in February. We have several field trips planned which should be a fun way to reinforce the skills we've learned.

So stay tuned here on our blog. We will discuss lessons we completed in class or homework assignments at times. We will sometimes complete projects through this blog as well as respond to questions posed here.
I look forward to a new and exciting school year and I hope you will come ready to learn on August 22nd. See ya then!!

It's all up to You

We are beginning a research project of your choice.  You may choose anything in the world to research about.  You will have until Wednesday to decide what you would like to do.  Talk with a friend, parent, sibling, or whoever you like to come with something you are interested in learning about.  Anything is fair game!!

You may use a variety of options to create your report.  You can scan Kids Info Bits, World Book, or Culture Grams to investigate ideas.  Think about people you know who can help you.  Think about someone you might be able to interview about your project.  Be creative!

For your project you may make a variety of presentations.  You can create a magazine or newspaper article.  You may decide to make a How-To Pamphlet or an Informational Picture Book.  You can create a Biography (a report about someone's life) or document things he or she did in a journal of activities.  You might choose to explain your topic using poetry or a diary of thoughts and feelings.  The fun part is, it's up to you.

So today your task is to go online to the sites provided.  You may take 15-20 minutes to look.  After looking I want you to comment about up to three ideas you are interested in, it may only be one or two but three should be the most..  You may already know what you are interested in, in which case I would like you to go read more about it.  But when time is up, I'd like you to have a couple of interesting ideas in your head.

Have fun!  And don't forget, it's all up to you!!
